대기가 불안정하여 강한 상승기류가 생기면 그 곳을 메우기 위해 주변에서 공기가 모여든다. 공기는 지구의 자전에 의한 전향력 때문에 북반구에서는 반시계방향으로 휘어져서 깔대기 모양의 회오리 현상이 생긴다. 이 현상을 토네이도라고 하며 토네이도가 수면 위를 지나갈 때를 용오름 현상이라고 한다.

When the atmosphere is unstable and a strong ascending air current is created, the air collects around it to fill the area. Due to the deflecting force formed from the earth’s rotation, air in the northern hemisphere bends anti-clockwise and a funnel-shaped whirlwind is created. This phenomenon is called a tornado when it is over land and a waterspout when it passes over the surface of water.
